Main letters
The twelve vowels and the eighteen consonants give life to the tamil language. So they are considered the first or main letteres.
Based on the duration of their pronounciation the vowels are divided in to short sounds and long sounds. When they help to point things அ இ உ are called pointers. When ஆ ஓ எ ஏ help to make questioning words they are called letters that ask questions.
Based on the duration of their pronounciation consonants are called ottru Depending upon the way the letters are catagorised in to vallinam (hard sounding letters),mellinam,(soft sounding letters) andidaiyinam(inberween sounds).
முதல் எழுத்துக்கள்
உயிரெழுத்துக்கள் பன்னிரெண்டும், மெய் யெழுத்துக்கள் பதினெட்டும் தமிழ் மொழி இயங்க உயிர்க் காரணமாக இருப்பதால் அவை முதல் எழுத்துக்கள் எனப்பட்டன.
உயிர் எழுத்துக்கள் ஒலியை அடிப்படையாகக கொண்டு குறில் நெடில் என்று இரண்டு விதமாகப் பிரிக்கப்படுகிறது. உயிர் எழுத்துக்கள் அ இ உ மூன்றும் சுட்டிக் காட்டப் பயன் படுத்தப் படுவதால் அவை சுட்டு எழுத்துக்கள் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகின்றன, ஆ ஓ எ ஏ என்ற உயிர் எழுத்துக்கள் வினா எழுத்துக்கள் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகின்றன.
மெய் எழுத்துக்கள் தங்கள் ஒலி அளவினால் ஒற்று என்று அழைக்கப்படும். அவை தங்களின் உச்சரிப்புத் தன்மை கொண்டு வல்லினம், மெல்லினம் இடையினம் என்று பிரிக்கப்படுகின்றன.
